Grooming

Brushing

Ideally, you should brush your Maine Coon cat daily, but at a minimum of 2-3 times a week to remove loose hairs and prevent tangles. It will help keep your cat’s coat healthy and it is great bonding time for you as well. The best brush is a soft bristle brush such as the Buddy System Pet Close Brush, Soft Touch Oval Palm Brush found on Amazon.

Nail Trimming

You will want to trim you cat’s claws to prevent damage to your furniture or your body during play. I recommend doing this every 7-10 days. This will vary greatly with each cat. I have some cats I have to trim weekly and others I only have to trim weekly. When they’re sleeping in my lap, I take a peak to see how sharp they are and determine the need to trim based on that.

When trimming you want to be careful to avoid the “quick.” That’s the pink area you see and it is filled with nerve endings and blood vessels. Because of that I recommend Nail Clippers with an LED light on them.

Teeth Brushing

Oral hygiene isn’t just for humans. Cats also need their teeth cleaned. Just like humans, poor oral health can lead to gingivitis and even spread to organs and cause endocarditis or valvular heart disease. So please provide your kitten with beautiful pearly whites just as you do for yourself. This Pet Brushing Kit is vet approved and a great choice. I prefer these over the ones that go over your finger to prevent unwanted bites.
